October Birthstone

What is the October birthstone?

The opal is the traditional birthstone for October. In Ancient Rome, the opal was known as the queen of gems and the Romans considered it a sign of purity and hope. The Greeks associated the opal jewelry with the ability to give the wearer the power of prophecy. In general, the opal is associated with the ability to influence happiness, loyalty, confidence, and faithfulness. It is also the gem given for the 13th wedding anniversary.

What is the meaning of the October birthstone?

The word, “opal” comes from the Greek term “opallos,” which stands for “to see a change” in color. It radiates a mysterious interplay of colors, which come out as delicate tints of different shades when observed from different angles. It is a variety of the soft quartz crystal, and gets its beautiful colors from the very tiny particles of air and water trapped within its fissures.

What is the October birthstone color?

Opal, the October birthstone color, can exist in various colors. The white opal is white with pale sparkles in colors of the rainbow. The black opal appears black, blue or gray in color from the ironstone in its formation.
Another type is the water or crystal opal, which is basically transparent and can also be referred to as the colorless opal, though it flashes brilliant colors within it when exposed to the light. Another type of opal is the fire opal. This is a transparent opal whose body color could be orange, red or yellow. It may also have colorful sparkles.
The finest opal stone is the Harlequin Opal and its colors are characterized by evenly distributed small flakes of different hues on the gem.

Where can you find the October birthstone?

Popular sources of the opal are the United States, Australia, Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico. Mexico is known to produce the most transparent opals with slight colorings packed in large patches. Also, the fire opals that come from Mexico are of one distinct color. They come in a deep fire-like red color, which may vary towards warm yellow.

What is the history of the opal, the October birthstone?

The opal has been known and revered by man for thousands of years for its beauty and mystery. Various ancient cultures from around the world have been intrigued by the opal and came up with different tales to express their reverence for this gem. Here are some of the tales;
The opal was sometimes referred to as the Eye Stone or Ophthalmius. During the 14th century, people believed that the opal could sharpen and strengthen vision. A superstition in India associated the opal stone with the ability to ease the mind of excess thoughts and enhance the memory. They would simply pass it across the brow to transfer those powers on the person.
Some folklore associated the opal with bad luck, too. This is because of the adversity that befell The Maiden of The Mist (1829), Anne of Geierstein, whose main jewelry included a big opal as narrated in Sir Walter Scott’s novel.
The Ancient Greeks saw the opal as possessing the power to give foresight and the gift of prophecy to the wearer if he or she used it selflessly. Otherwise, poor use would bring someone misfortune with love, disappointment, and failure in all ventures.

The Perfect Wedding Proposal | Proposal Tips

You've found the right person. You've found the right ring. Now you have to find the right moment to pop the question.
So how do you make your proposal turn out flawlessly? We have plenty of tried-and-true tips to help you, but overall, it all comes down to just one thing: effort.
Putting in real effort, thought and love into your proposal makes all the difference. Remember, your proposal doesn't have to change the world. It just has to show your partner that they mean the world to you.
Here are a few tips that will help you along the way:

Know the Answer

Your proposal should be surprising, but it shouldn't come directly out of left field. Before you pull a ring out, have a good idea how your partner will respond. "Will you marry me?" shouldn't be your first discussion on the subject.

Rules of the Engagement (Ring)

Here’s where a little bit of effort goes a long way. The history of the diamond as an engagement ring first became popular in the 1930’s, but the idea of an engagement ring has been around for centuries.
If you’re still deciding on a diamond engagement ring, consider doing some window shopping with your partner prior to making a purchase. If you want to keep things more secretive, talk to your partner’s friends and family, or their family jeweler, to get a feel for their taste.
Another option is to use a stand-in ring for the proposal. Perhaps you can use their great grandmother’s diamond engagement ring, and then take your partner shopping later. (We can tell you everything you need to know about how to buy a diamond.)

Peace-of-Mind

Do your homework before buying the engagement ring. Most importantly, find a jeweler you trust.
Don't have a jeweler? An AGS-certified jeweler is always ready to help. Also, since you’re making such a big investment, make sure you insure the ring as soon as you purchase it. Your jeweler will be able to discuss this with you, or you may be able to insure it for an additional cost under your homeowner's or tenants insurance policy.

Ask Permission, Not Forgiveness

Before you take a knee, take the time to speak with your partner's parents first. Asking permission is a tradition carried since the Roman times, and it’s a great way to make a good impression on your future in-laws.

Be Creative

This is your chance to shine. You may get some inspiration from our list of the top 10 movie proposals! You could also use modern technology for a Twitter proposal.
No matter what you do, just put your heart into it. Here are a few ideas to get your started:
